The Anatomy of a Special Order: How HSS Hermès Bags Are Made — and Why They Matter

As someone with over a decade of experience sourcing the rarest Hermès bags in the world, I’ve come to appreciate the quiet power of a Special Order bag — or as it’s known among insiders, an HSS.

Recognised by the discreet horseshoe stamp next to the Hermès insignia, HSS pieces represent the pinnacle of the maison’s craftsmanship and exclusivity. They are not just status symbols — they are stories, milestones, and deeply personal collector’s pieces. And in this space, rarity is currency.

Let’s explore what makes a Special Order bag so significant — and how, through Indulge In Luxury, our clients gain access to what was once considered unattainable.

What Is an HSS Bag?

HSS stands for Horseshoe Stamp, a small but meaningful symbol stamped beside the Hermès logo, identifying a bespoke bag made through the maison’s exclusive Special Order process.

While Hermès has long offered custom options for top-tier clients, it wasn’t until 2006 that the horseshoe stamp was introduced — a subtle nod that says: “I was invited.”

It’s a mark only those within the inner circle of Hermès collecting truly understand — and one that sets the bag apart in both sentiment and value.

How Do You Qualify for a Special Order?

HSS bags are offered by invitation only — typically extended to the house’s most loyal clients. Eligibility requires a longstanding purchase history across categories, including handbags, ready-to-wear, jewellery, homewares, and leather goods.

These invitations are issued seasonally — usually in spring and fall — and are extended at the discretion of a Sales Associate or boutique manager.

For most, the process takes years to unlock. But at Indulge In Luxury, our network offers something different: access without the wait.

What Happens at a Special Order Appointment?

Once invited, you’ll sit down in a private setting with your Hermès Sales Associate to begin the design process. You'll be presented with exclusive colour and leather charts reserved only for HSS, as well as a curated selection of hardware finishes.

If ordering a Kelly, you’ll also select your strap length — options typically range from 70cm to 120cm. Many clients prefer the 105cm strap for mini Kellys, as it offers more flexibility for shoulder wear.

This appointment is more than a consultation — it’s a rare moment of creativity with one of the world’s most prestigious maisons.

The Anatomy of a Design

This is where it gets personal.

From leather type and colour placement to hardware and stitching, your vision comes to life. The most common sizes offered for Special Orders include the Kelly 20 and Birkin 25, though larger styles can be requested — especially by VVVIPs.

And for those at the very top of the hierarchy, exotic HSS pieces can be offered. These are incredibly rare and often increase in value upon delivery.

From Paris to Production

Once your design is finalised, it’s submitted to the Hermès atelier in Paris, where master artisans review the request. In some cases, combinations may not be feasible and alternate options from your list will be used.

Production can take up to two years, but once your bag arrives, you’ll have the option to view and decide if you wish to proceed with purchase. If not, the piece will be discreetly offered to another client seeking a similar combination.

Why HSS Bags Matter

To collectors, an HSS bag is more than just a handbag — it's a mark of distinction.

In an era of mass production, these bags are proof of patience, loyalty, and access. Their resale value often exceeds that of boutique-issued bags, and they represent a level of customisation few brands in the world offer.

This is why Indulge In Luxury clients turn to us — not just for access, but for expertise.

Client Stories

Some recent highlights from our HSS sourcing:

K20 HSS Sakura/Nata Chèvre with Gold Hardware — sourced for long-time client and Dubai Bling personality Jwana Karim. This piece was exceptionally rare and personally shared by Jwana on her Instagram stories.

K20 HSS Craie/Blue Glacier in Epsom Leather with Permabrass Hardware — curated for a Paris-based collector as her very first HSS. Designed for both day and evening styling, it was the perfect Parisian companion.

Another standout was a K20 HSS Black/White Epsom with Gold Hardware — often nicknamed “The Panda” for its striking monochrome palette. A long-time collector of rare Hermès finds, my client had this exact piece on her radar for months. When I sourced it, she was beyond thrilled to add it to her collection — a true collector’s gem, made even more special with the Horseshoe Stamp.

Each HSS story is different. And that’s the beauty of it.

Final Thoughts

Sourcing HSS bags isn’t just about access — it’s about understanding each client’s journey. Every detail matters. Every choice holds meaning. And for many, their HSS bag becomes the piece that defines their collection.

If you’ve dreamt of owning a Special Order Hermès, I would be honoured to help make it a reality.

Luxury, curated for you.
