The Chanel Métiers d’Art Collection: An Invitation to Fall in Love
Since 2002, the Chanel Métiers d’Art collection has celebrated the exceptional savoir-faire of the Maisons d’Art, honouring the talented artisans whose centuries-old techniques transform fashion into art. This is not a seasonal collection; it is a statement of legacy. From embroiderers and feather workers to goldsmiths, pleaters, and milliners, every detail is storytelling at its finest — each stitch, embellishment, and silhouette unfolding a new narrative.
This year’s collection takes us on a dreamlike journey inspired by Chinese lacquer screens, their oneiric landscapes, and the romantic silhouettes evoking the beauty of Hangzhou’s West Lake. Camellias, lotus flowers, and delicate birds adorn pieces that pay homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s fascination with the Orient, and in particular, her love of the Coromandel screens in her apartment on 31 Rue Cambon.
The Métiers d’Art collection was established by Karl Lagerfeld in 2002 as an annual event each December, created to showcase the artistry of the talented craftsmen and women who embody Chanel’s enduring legacy.
For me personally, this collection is always mesmerising. I make it a point to add at least one piece from each year, as I see the Métiers d’Art as a magical masterpiece — a testament to imagination and exceptional craftsmanship. When I viewed this collection on launch day, I was captivated. As a creative, I look beyond the obvious to the tiny details that reveal the story behind each piece.
For example, I collect mini rectangle Chanel bags, and one piece caught my eye immediately: a black velvet mini 2.55 reissue. But it wasn’t just the black velvet that stood out. The gold chain, subtly encrusted with diamanté stones, shimmered like hidden treasure. From afar, it simply gleamed gold; up close, you discover the glistening stones, almost whispering a secret. It is details like these that turn a piece into a legacy.
Sometimes I imagine Gabrielle Chanel herself would have loved this collection. I believe she would have revelled in the intricacy and storytelling woven into each design, seeing her own dreamlike visions come to life.
My personal recommendations from this collection:
Shoes: Suede calfskin and lambskin boots in beige and black as seen on the runway; shiny crumpled calfskin black pumps with a tower heel silhouette; and black velvet Mary Janes
Ready-to-Wear: Tweed jackets with matching skirts — particularly Look 11 from the Chanel lookbook. Look 43, a long wool maxi dress perfect for layering necklaces. And Look 54, a white silk embellished blouse and pleated skirt — timeless, feminine, and quintessentially Chanel.
Accessories: Necklaces that carry personal symbolism. One favourite: the butterfly-embellished necklace — for me, a constant reminder to welcome transformation.
Bags: The black velvet mini 2.55 rectangle with diamanté chain — the perfect evening piece. The mini flap in gold and black sequins shaped like the iconic camellia flower. And for collectors: the sphere and star minaudière bags, only available in limited quantities to VIP clients. At Indulge in Luxury, we have access to these exquisite collectables.
The Métiers d’Art collection reveals a story in every stitch, transforming Gabrielle Chanel’s Coromandel dreamscape into a living masterpiece. Each piece is unique, and from what I’ve seen, this is a collection worth investing in.
I’m here to help you curate the perfect additions to your wardrobe. This collection, in particular, feels especially personal — a tribute to Gabrielle’s untold, dreamlike journey that began with her Coromandel screens on Rue Cambon.
